Peter Samuel Short, tenacious and loving husband and father passed away peacefully at the age of 65 on Thursday, March 26, 2020. Peter was born and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, before moving to British Columbia to start his teaching career and his beloved family.
He lived and taught for the majority of his life at St. Mary's Elementary School in Chilliwack and had an incredible passion for education, athletics, and the triumph of the human spirit. Peter enjoyed sport in all capacities, whether it be playing, coaching, or observing, which he instilled in his children and the many youth that he instructed over the years. Peter was also an avid music lover and was never afraid to sing a Cat Stevens number out of tune. He was revered for his compassionate spirit, good humour, and soft heart, and he valued precious moments and sentimentality. Peter was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Bernice Short, along with his brother and teammate Wayne and father-in-law Douglas Shano. He is survived by his wife Elaine (née Shano), his five children, Michael (Jackie), Laura (Frank), Blair (Cesar), Margaret (Evan), and Bridget (Matthew), and his granddaughter Eileen and her unborn sibling, his siblings: Kevin (Mary Elizabeth), CarolWadden (Joe), and Bernadette Rowe (Randy), sister-in-lawTimmie, mother-in-lawFrances Shanoandsiblings-in-law: Fr.PhilipShano,Bob(Sharon),Paul Bev),Michael (Analee), Jane (Harold) and Kevin, close friends Melinda Hurley and Mark MacPherson, along with many nieces, nephews, and other friends (that became family) who admired him and looked forward to his company. The Short Family would further like to offer sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Kenneth Hirst, his office staff, and to all the paramedics, physicians, nurses, and paramedical staff from Chilliwack General Hospital and Fraser Health, who offered a caring and supportive hand to Peter with his health concerns over the years, in particular during these final few months. Due to current global circumstances and necessary restrictions, a Catholic funeral service has not been planned for this time, but will be organized for a later date.
