Peter Kornelius Neufeld passed away on December 29, 2009 at the age of 86. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Helen, in 2002. Peter was born in Ekaterinowka, Russia in 1923. He began playing music at the young age of 8 and joined an orchestra at age 11. As a young adult, Peter fought in the Second World War where he lost many friends and family members. After the war, he worked in Germany for a year where he found Helen, his lovely wife-to-be, singing in the choir. Peter and Helen courted for some time and when she promised to keep the Sabbath with him he knew he would marry her. In 1947, Peter took the risk of moving to a different continent in search of a better life for himself and Helen. After a very long journey by ship, Peter arrived in Canada. He worked as a logger on a six-month contract in Ontario before moving to North Kildonan, Winnipeg. In 1948, Helen and her mother made the journey to be with Peter in Canada. Peter and Helen were married in 1949. The couple had five children in Winnipeg before moving to Chilliwack in 1962. They bought a plot of land on Broadway Street where they had a hobby farm for many years. Growing up in Russia, Peter was the family mechanic—he could fix anything—and so, in 1964, he opened Pete’s Motor Repair where he served the community of Chilliwack for 35 years. Apart from serving the community as a mechanic, Peter served the Lord Jesus as a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for his entire life. He was a very social man and had a great passion for visiting with friends and family. Peter always made an effort to find the humour in everything and was always entertaining to be with. Peter passed on his love of music to his family which will be shared for generations to come. He is survived by his children: Anne Lora (Norman) Trayer, Karen (Garth) Dauncey, Rolly (Peggy- Sue), Kathe, Ellen (Brian) Loewen, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, relatives in Germany, and friends. A viewing will be held on Friday January 8, 2010 at 11:00am at the Chilliwack Seventh Day Adventist Church. The Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 Noon followed by refreshments in the Nu Life Center. The family will join friends in the Center following a private interment. A special thanks to the wonderful staff at Cascade Hospice for providing Peter and his family with comfort and support during his final days.
