April 5, 1949 - April 5, 2022
The family of Peter Dobell of Chilliwack is saddened to announce his passing on April 5, 2022 (his 73rd birthday) at the Chilliwack General Hospital with his wife Wendy at his side. Peter recently battled cancer-related health issues without complaining and was fighting until the end. He was a devoted and loving husband, dedicated parent, fun grandpa, and a loyal son, brother, friend, and uncle.
Peter was born in Jersey, Channel Islands on April 5, 1949, the third son to Kenneth and Doris Dobell. He immigrated to BC in 1967 with a plan to work in forestry. He was later joined by his parents and brother Vernon (and his family). He married Wendy Dobell (nee Weger) in 1980 who came with 3 young daughters—who are forever grateful for the important role that Peter played in their lives. Peter and Wendy lived at Ryder Lake for 22 years and moved off the hill in 2005.
Peter had a variety of careers (farm worker, Ministry of Forests, landscaping) before eventually settling as a correctional officer for BC Corrections at minimum security camps in the Chilliwack area, retiring as a supervisor in 2004.
Peter led a full life and enjoyed his many activities and hobbies where he made life-long friends. He was a Life Member of the Kinsmen Club of Chilliwack, a volunteer fire fighter and eventually Chief of the Ryder Lake Fire Department, a curler, an avid competitive target shooter, a driver for a car dealership, and a board member for Halcyon Meadows. Peter competed around the world as a member of the Canadian Rifle Shooting Team and at multiple World Police and Fire Games. Peter served as President of the British Columbia Rifle Association (where he also held various other positions) and was a long-standing member of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association.
Peter had all the qualities of a great husband, parent, brother, and friend and will be remembered for his witty sense of humour and many one-liners. He was dedicated to helping others and the world is a better place because of him.
Peter will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched, particularly by his wife Wendy; his step daughters Toni (Tim) Botham, Tara (Matt) Dobson, and Tracy (Derren) Adams; his brothers Vernon (Billie) and Ian; his grandchildren Paige, Garrett, Alic, Max, Jay, and Ellie; his great-grandchildren Ava and Liam; his many nieces and nephews, in particular Jayne and Joanne; his extended family; and too many close friends to name (you know who you are!).
Peter was pre-deceased by his parents Kenneth and Doris Dobell.
Peter always enjoyed having a beer with friends and family, so please send him a cheer as you gather with loved ones and honour him by lending a hand in your community and helping others. In lieu of flowers, Peter's family requests any donations go to the Salvation Army or Red Cross.
Peter's Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 1 at the Halcyon Meadows Club House at 46000 Thomas Road in Chilliwack (parking at GW Graham Secondary School).
