Pat was well into her 101st year when she died at Heritage Village last Wednesday. Born in Belfast, Pat came to Canada in 1924 with her parents and seven siblings in order to leave the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland.
She came to Chilliwack in 1956 because of her husband’s (Harper) military transfer after having lived in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Ottawa.
She is predeceased by Harper (1970) and son, Trevor (2003) and three brothers.
Pat is missed by son Kevin (Linda) in Kelowna; and daughter Bev in Vancouver; daughter-in-law Sandra in Cultus Lake; grandchildren Jason (Jo) in Sardis, Cindy Whiteside (Chad) in Kelowna, Lori Garland (Gene) in Oromocto and Tammi in Campbell River; and great grandsons Joe, Ian, Brian and Bradley.
Pat is survived by younger sisters Isobel Connor and Alice Shepherd of Toronto and Lenore Lind of Santa Barbara and nieces and nephews.
Pat was an energetic and interested person all her life, and lived independently until she was 93. She was known to many as a hair dresser, to a few as a boarding home keeper, to some as a bridge and crib player and dabbling painter, to all as a strong, cheerful, well dressed, ever polite lady who wanted to know what was news. Her perspective in her senior years was always one of kindness and gratitude.
Pat had a wonderful celebration on her 100th, with many friends and family as well as her prize from the Queen.
That will be our memorial for her and there will be a family ceremony on her birthday when her ashes will be interred in her husband’s gravesite.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Pat’s memory to Heritage Village for needed equipment (7525 Topaz Drive, Sardis, B. C. V5R 3C9).
