September 12, 1934 – August 8, 2021
With sadness we announce the death of Pamela George, our remarkable mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who passed away peacefully on August 8, in Ottawa Ontario, with 3 generations of offspring near her.
Born Pamela Orme, in Weyburn Saskatchewan, ‘Pam’ spent her early years in the Prairies, the youngest (with twin brother Peter) of four siblings. After the War, the family moved to BC, where she was captivated by the ocean, mountains and trees, a delight that was to stay with her the rest of her life.
After a brief period in Victoria they settled in Chilliwack where Pam graduated from high school (CSSS 1952) and met her forever love, Fred George.
After training as a Registered Nurse at St Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver (SPH 1956) Pam married Fred (1956) and they stayed in Vancouver until 1959, when they returned to Chilliwack for the long haul. Pam nursed for a year at Chilliwack General Hospital, before embracing the vocation of homemaker, mother of four, and caregiver to the extended family. Ever the hub, we will miss her energetic and fun loving spirit.
Pam was active in many community activities. A member of the Anglican Church, she also gave her time to Salvation Army social services, Meals on Wheels, and the Chilliwack Rotary Club with which Fred was increasingly involved. Pam and Fred facilitated much Rotary fellowship, hosted international exchange students, and accommodated visiting Rotarians through the Travel and Home Hosting Fellowship.
In the 1980s, Pam refreshed her RN registration and nursed for a number of years at Kent Institution federal penitentiary, later volunteering as a hospice nurse, and driver for the BC Cancer Society. She remained active in the Probus Club and as an Honorary Member of the Chilliwack Rotary Club until her move to Ottawa in 2019 to be nearer daughter Cathie. Ontario was never to be home, however; her heart was always in BC.
Pam is predeceased by her husband Fred George, parents (Claude and Marion Orme), two brothers (Bob and Ted Orme) and her daughter-in-law (Shannon George). She is survived by daughters Constance Martin, Carol George, and Catherine Yamashita (Kevin), son Richard George, grandchildren Bridget Olver (Jordan), Matthew Yamashita and Michael Martin, great grandchildren Joseph, Arwen, Isabel, Alice and Jacob Olver, brother Peter Orme, and ten nieces and nephews and their families.
A Memorial Service to give thanks for the life of Pamela George will be held at 2 pm on Saturday September 25, 2021, at St John’s Anglican Church, 46098 Higginson Road, Sardis, BC, V2R 2A9.
Should you wish to give a gift in honour of Pam, a donation to The Rotary Foundation (Canada) via the ‘Memorial or Tribute Gift Form’ at www.rotary.org/en/donate would be gratefully received.
