Otto Mammel, beloved husband, father, papa, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 27, 2004.
Otto is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evellyn; daughters, Lark (Gary) Young, and Judy (Chris) Scott; sons, Brian (Carol), and Brad (Lisa); grandchildren, Joel (Sara), Brodie, Tara, Brian, Kaela, Darcy, Leah, Mitchell, Tristan, Kennedy, and Lillian; sisters, Hannah (Harry) Sukkan, and Lillian (Bill) Walker; sister and brother and brother-in-laws; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Otto was born in Klostitz, Romania on November 22, 1925, and was the fourth son in a family of eight children. The family immigrated to Richdale, Alta. when Otto was four years old, and moved to Chilliwack in 1937, where they purchased a farm on South Sumas Rd.
He married Evellyn Hayes on November 22, 1948. He became a faller and was known by many as having a strong work ethic. As well as logging, Otto became involved in real estate development and construction, a career he carried on with until taken ill with leukemia in the spring of 2004.
He actively participated in minor hockey for many years, coaching the PeeWee Division to the Provincial Championships in 1965. His love of hockey evolved into being owner and manager of the Chilliwack Bruins.
Some of his favourite times were spent fishing, motorhoming with Evellyn, family gatherings with all the grandchildren, and meeting his buddies at ‘Otto’s Garage’.
Otto will be remembered for his enthusiastic approach to life, his generosity, his hearty laughter, and a teasing sense of humour. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered.
Viewing will be offered Thursday, Sept. 2 from 7-9 p.m. at Henderson’s Funeral Home chapel, Chilliwack.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 3, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Alliance Church, Young Rd., Chilliwack. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Canadian Cancer Foundation, or the B.C. Cancer Society.
