In loving memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Norma Smith passed away on January 4, 2023, at Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 71. While we will miss her dearly, we are thankful that she is no longer suffering after dealing with cancer since 2016.
Norma was a friend to many, a talented artist, and an avid adventurer. Norma was conscientious, passionate about environmental stewardship, and loved being around people. She loved to garden, walk her dog Topaz around town, spend time with friends, and participate in Monday Painters.
Norma was born and raised in Bethany, Ontario. She attended Lindsay Collegiate Vocational Institute and went on to study Art and Interior Design at Georgian College in Barrie Ontario. After graduating she chose a life of adventure by backpacking in South East Asia, moving to Australia, travelling to Mexico, Brazil, and Peru and moving to British Columbia. Norma owned a business in Kelowna and later moved to Vancouver where she studied art at Emily Carr and graduated from a holistic practitioner school. She then moved to Agassiz in 2002 to work at the Harrison Hotel spa, which led to her opening her own clinic, Body Balance Therapies. Norma fought cancer with great determination. She did all she could to not allow it to stop her from seeing, experiencing and creating beauty. Norma found great solace in her art and was grateful to be part of the Monday Painters community as it nourished her love of painting and it provided a supportive community during her difficult illness.
Norma is predeceased by her parents Carl and Loraine Smith. She leaves behind her siblings and their partners: Allan and Donna Smith, Grace and Jim Brown, and Carolyn and Ray Porteous. She also leaves behind 6 nieces and nephews, 16 great-nieces and nephews, and 1 great-great-nephew. Norma was well-loved by many and will be missed by her many friends.
Thank you to all who helped Norma during the time she needed it most.
