We deeply regret to announce the passing of Mildred “Mickey” Burgess on January 24th, 2006 at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
Mickey was born in Rouleau, Saskatchewan on December 22nd, 1914 to Fred and Margaret Eckhoff.
When she was sixteen the family moved to Chilliwack and farmed on Fairfield Island and later in Rosedale.
Mickey met her future husband, Len, at a local dance and they were married on November 11th, 1937. They had forty-nine happy years together.
She was predeceased by her loving husband in 1986 and her brother Lloyd in 1980.
Mildred is survived by her two daughters, Carol Mailer (Jake Westerman) of Vernon, Marilyn (Andrew) Armstrong of Denver, Colorado and one sister Helen Van Winkle of Vernon. She also leaves to mourn three grandsons, Dale (Heather), New Westminster, B.C., Kevin of Vernon, Clayton, Denver, Colorado and four great-grandsons, Clinton, Brendan, Kody and Alex as well as several nephews and nieces.
Mildred spent over 60 years in Chilliwack but moved to Vernon fifteen years ago to be near her family. In Vernon she enjoyed her neighbours at Spruce Landing and was also a member of the Schubert Choir and the Zion United Church in Armstrong.
During her years in Chilliwack she was an active with the Hospital Auxiliary and a lifetime member of the Curling Club. She also enjoyed music, knitting and traveling. “Nana”, to the boys, took every opportunity to watch her grandsons and great-grandsons play hockey and baseball and was their biggest fan.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt and will be sorely missed.
A graveside service will be held at the Chilliwack Cemetery on Saturday, January 28th, 2006 at 1:00pm to be followed by a memorial tea a the Rhombus Hotel, Chilliwack.
