November 12, 1929 – July 22, 2021
It is with sadness that we say Mike Zaklan passed away on 22 July 2021 in Chilliwack, British Columbia, he was 91 years old. Mike leaves behind his loving wife Ruby of 48 years, as well as his immediate family including two daughters Wendy Zaklan and Laurie Corbeil, granddaughter Mikka Corbeil, stepson Eric Enger, and step grandsons Lynden and Rylen Enger.
He will be lovingly remembered by his sister Bess, along with his extended family and friends. Mike was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sister’s Lorrie, Helen and brother Steve.
Mike was born in Vancouver B.C. on 12 November 1929 to Yugoslav immigrant parents Eva and Rade Zaklan. Mike started work at the shipyards in Vancouver at the age of 12, also working at farms and even the carnival; however, logging ended up being his passion. Starting as a spark chaser, Mike progressed through the ranks becoming a choker man, high rigger, and then supervisor, before eventually becoming a manager.
Along with his wife Ruby, the two started Zaklan Timber Ltd., spending most of his years on the coast of B.C. and in the Fraser Valley. As logging camps were distant along the coast, Mike’s need for flying in and out of logging camps quickly developed into another passion. Being a “Bush Pilot” had its own adventures in those days, and one might even say he had his “ups and downs”.
In 1961, Mike moved to Chilliwack and bought his first home where he enjoyed his family, life, coworkers and friends.
Mike always enjoyed golf but never had a chance to play much during working years. In 1985, Mike and Ruby began travelling south to Pismo Beach among other places to improve their golf games. This went on for 35 years, along with side trips to Australia and Europe – a good life was being enjoyed by both.
In 2005, Mike took up curling which he enjoyed along with the company of his friends. In 2012, Mike was encouraged to write a book about his life, and so he did. The book is called “The High Rigger”, and within the book is the following quote which tells a lot about “Mike” Milan Zaklan:
“Integrity is telling myself the truth, honesty is telling the truth to other people”
Rest in Peace Mike, you are loved and will not be forgotten.
At Mike & Ruby’s request there will be no service.
