Mary Grunau (nee Hildebrandt)

February 11, 1925 – February 16, 2019
It is with sadness we announce the passing of our mother and Oma, Mary Grunau. Mom was born February 11, 1925 to Maria and Gerhard Hildebrandt in Burwalde, Ukraine. In 1942, during WW II her family had to flee the Ukraine and lived for 5 years in refugee camps in Germany. In 1944 she married Jacob Grunau. They immigrated to Canada in 1948 and stayed in Henley, Saskatchewan for a few months before moving on to Greendale, B.C. where they had many relatives and friends. Mom loved all her farm animals, flower gardens, working on her many needlework projects and making blankets for MCC.

She was predeceased by her husband Jake in 2002, after nearly 60 years of marriage; her brother John, granddaughter Samantha, and step-sister Michi in Germany. She is survived by her sister Katherine Mellander – Kelowna; her brother Gerhard – Germany; daughter Mary (Dick) Hawkshaw; son George (Gabriele Soppit); son Allan (Bev); daughter Clara (Lou) Roussinos; as well as grandchildren Carla (Greg) Mackintosh, Leanne (Jeff) Caidler; Jodi (Aaron) Fraser; Stephanie Roussinos; Stephen Hawkshaw; Jake & Joe Grunau; and 7 great grandchildren.

Interment will be held at Greendale Cemetery (Valley View Gardens), Watson Rd, Sardis, at 12:00 Noon on Monday, February 25 followed by a church service at 1:30 pm at the River of Life Church, 42369 South Sumas Rd, Greendale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MCC.
