November 7, 1923 - January 18, 2020
It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Elizabeth Phelps (nee Ferguson) on January 18, 2020, in Abbotsford, BC.
Mary was born and raised in Galt (Cambridge), Ontario, the only daughter and youngest child of Harriett and Galt Ferguson. She was an excellent student, attending Galt Collegiate Institute before graduating from the University of Toronto in 1947 with an MA in Physics. She carried on at UofT as a research assistant before moving west to Vancouver Island, then to Vancouver where she continued as a research assistant at UBC doing some of the earliest work with one of the first electron microscopes in western Canada. After relocating to Chilliwack in the 1950s, she put her professional life on hold to raise a family and later taught biology at both campuses of Fraser Valley College.
Mom will be remembered for her wit and love of good jazz, local theatre, the Vancouver Canucks and the B.C. Lions. She was a long-standing member of the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club and the University Women's Club.
Mary was predeceased by her brothers Ian (Eleanor) and Bob (Margaret) and is survived by her children Susan, Barbara Eveleigh (Dave) and Stuart (Lorna), grandchildren Nathan (Lisa) and Ryan (Catherine) Eveleigh, Andrew, Brendan (Emily) and Meighan (Alex) Phelps, and great grandson Beau Phelps. She is lovingly remembered by many friends.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to her neighbours at Lindell Beach, particularly Judy Plummer, Dr. Scott Markey, and the staff at Bevan Village in Abbotsford for the love and care they gave Mom over the past several years.
By request there will be no funeral. A memorial service/celebration of life will be held at a later date.
