Martin Olav sand

Martin was born in Aasen, Norway on March 6, 1923 and passed away, with his family at his side, on July 8, 2006. He came to Canada in 1928 and grew up in Limerick, Saskatchewan. As an Air Force pilot during the war, he was posted to B.C. then settled in Agassiz in 1945, where he met his wife of 58 years, Mollie (Appel). He worked at Modern Tire garage for 33 years, as well as driving the local school bus until his retirement. He was a Life member of the Elks Lodge, founding member of the Agassiz-Harrison Search and Rescue, and Agassiz Ambulance service. He also served for 43 years on the Agassiz volunteer Fire Department (12 years as chief), and was given a Meritorious Service Award and Life membership to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #32. He was also Commodore of the Harrison Lake Powerboat Association and member of the Sons of Norway.

He is survived by his wife Mollie and children Leslie (Donna), Marlene (Dieter Hartmetz), Debi (Martin Prus), Greg (Debbie), and Chris (Marlene), and grandchildren Shaun and Katie; Leeanne, Meagan and Kyle; Wesley and Nathan; Jason, Amber, Colin, Jesse, Cody, Cory, Nicky, and Dusty; and great grandchildren Jocelyn, Josiah, Hannah, and Alesha; sisters Karen, Marie (Fred Hull), Violet (Helmut Scheiner), Shirley (Bob Russell), Doreen (Mel Chambers), Hjordis and Sharon, and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins across Canada, and numerous relatives in Norway. Pre-deceased by brothers Odd, Gordon, Keith, and Leslie, and by sisters Berna, Irene, and Margaret.

A Celebration of Martin’s Life will take place on Friday, July 14, 2006 at the Agassiz Agricultural Hall, at 2:00 pm. The family would welcome any stories or memories that you might like to share at that time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Agassiz-Harrison Search and Rescue and Kent (Agassiz) Jaws of Life/Fire Department.
