Martha Wald, (née Nitsch) aged 98, passed away on October 19, 2013 at Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack. Born June 18, 1915 in Orenburg, Russia, where her parents were interned, she spent her childhood in Tauroge, Lithuania. She was employed in Berlin, Germany, from age 15 till she came to Canada in 1937. During her intended one-year stay she met and married Eugen Wald. They raised their daughters in Montreal where Martha worked as the secretary and bookkeeper for her husband's business. She was a respected member of the German Benevolent Society. In 1973 the couple relocated to BC, settling in the Chilliwack area.

Though with her husband she had participated in the Chilliwack Golden K Kiwanis Club for a number of years, Martha became a full member in 1989. Since 2005 she has been active in the "Ageing Disgracefully" chapter of the Red Hat Society. She was an inspiration and role model to those who knew her.

Predeceased by her husband Eugen, her sister Maria Hoffman and her granddaughter Sigrid Grundmann, she is survived by daughters Gertrude (Peter) Baader and Erika (Walter) Grundmann; grandsons Erik (Dawn) Grundmann, Karl (Catherine) Baader, Hanns Baader; and eight great-grandchildren. The family is grateful to all who helped her live independently despite the progressive deterioration of her vision, and to the caring staff at Cascade Hospice, who eased her through the final weeks of her long life.
