Magdalena STEEG

Mrs. Magdalena Steeg was born in Kisker, Yugoslavia on April 18, 1916.

Her parents were Michael and Philippina Grass. She was baptized in Kisker, and went to school there and got her confirmation there.

She enjoyed a happy childhood and youth. In February 1938 she married Henry Steeg. In 1939 her daughter Philippina was born but died two months later. In September 1940 her son Henry Jr. was born and in 1943 her daughter Hildegard, who died in June 1945 on the flight from Germany to Yugoslavia.

Magdalena’s husband Henry had joined the army in October of 1943. This was the beginning of a hard time for Magdalena and her son. They were forced to leave their home and had to go back to Germany. Later they had to move back to Yugoslavia, and finally ended up in a reception camp in Austria.

In June of 1946 Magdalena and her son could finally go to Linkenheim, Germany where her husband Henry was already desperately waiting for his family.

In March 1954 they decided to immigrate to Canada. The first two years they spent in Alberta and afterwards they settled down in Chilliwack, B.C.

They bought several farms. Henry Jr. worked at his parent’s farm but after he died in an accident, being only 29.

Magdalena and her husband sold the farm and started buying and administrating apartment buildings. In 1990 they both retired after long years of hard work. In May 1995 they moved once more, back to Germany. Henry died there in April 1996 of a severe illness. Magdalena decided to move back to Chilliwack.
