“Betty”

Adored mother and grandmother and cherished friend to many, Betty passed away in Vancouver on August 16, 2008 at the age of 90 due to complications caused by a recent stroke.

She was born and grew up in Leamington, Ontario, then, as a newlywed, was swept away by husband Gordon to Chilliwack, B.C. where they raised their family of five children.

Originally a professional clothing designer and dress-maker, Betty was renowned for her flamboyant style and love of colour. Other passions included horse riding (even participating in drill team competitions on her beloved Nibs), gardening, small dogs (especially Angel), and owls (with a knick-knack collection numbering in the hundreds).

She loved and savoured her life—the countless dinner parties that she hosted, her lovely home, her extensive travel, her sturdy Christian Science faith, and, oh yes, her “happy hour.” But mostly, she loved her children.

Widowed in 1991 and recently predeceased by her son Ron, she is survived by her children: Carolyn, Brian, Susan, and Pat, and by eight grandchildren: Paul, Michael, Conner, Kelsey, Brodie, Deanne, Paula, and Julia — all of whom will carry in their hearts indelible memories of this feisty, generous, and good-natured little lady with the big blue eyes, who never lost her sense of humour even in the final difficult days at the hospital.

At Betty’s request, there will be no formal funeral service. The immediate family will gather in Vancouver to celebrate her life.

Instead of sending flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice (hers was the SPCA).
