(Dec. 9, 1917 - Aug. 1, 2008)

Laura passed away peacefully at Heritage Village after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Gordon; her granddaughter, Christine Armstrong; and her brother, Maynard Walsh.

Laura will be sadly missed and forever loved by her sons Jack (Gerri) of Lloydminster, AB; and Don (Barb) of Chilliwack, BC; her grandchildren: Courtney, Cam (Peggy), Bob (Megan) and Lindsay; and her twin great-granddaughters Kylie and Jordan.

Laura was born on December 9, 1917 on her parent’s homestead at Lemsford, Sask. She grew up in the Lemsford/Abby area of Saskatchewan where she later taught school, met and married Gordon on June 30, 1942, worked the family farm with Gordon and had her two sons.

After successful careers in teaching (in Abby and Aylsham, SK) and in social work (in Regina, SK.), Laura and Gordon were drawn once more to farming, this time with their sons. They farmed for seven years in southern Saskatchewan before retiring to Chilliwack, BC in 1970 where they became dispatchers and caretakers of the downtown Chilliwack Fire Hall for three years.

Mom was a warm, loving, and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She tirelessly cared for us all and was always there if we needed her. She loved nothing more than to have family and friends gather around her table for great food, laughs, and a good game of cards. Her door was always open and she greeted everyone with her beautiful smile and big hug.

Although Alzheimer’s presented her with many challenges and restrictions, her great spirit and generous heart remained with her until the end.

The family would like to express their tremendous gratitude to her wonderful caregivers at Heritage Village whose exemplary care and compassion kept her smiling and allowed her to live out her days with dignity. Also our heartfelt thanks to Mom’s roommate, Netty, who became her special friend and guardian angel and to Dr. H. Bright for his care of mom for many years.

If you would like to honour Mom’s memory, may we suggest you have friends and family gather around your table for a good old-fashioned home-cooked meal. She would like that.

Graveside Service was held on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. from the Chilliwack Cemeteries, followed by a gathering of family and friends.
