On February 27, 2010, Ruth Helmer passed away peacefully at Chilliwack General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Since Ruth’s diagnosis on Christmas Day, she was able to be at home with family and friends and her beloved pets Nicky and Rusty. Ruth’s faith provided her incredible comfort and strength during this time.

Ruth is survived by her loving husband John of 55 years, daughter Debbie Stewart (Blair), son Mike Helmer (Andrea), grandchildren, Courtney, Taylor, Connor and Sydney, sister Madeline Waddingham (Russ), brother Joe Lowry (Jenny) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was born on a farm in Darlingford, Manitoba on September 11th, 1935. Upon her marriage to the love of her life John, in 1955 they moved to Chilliwack, BC, and in 1958 they moved to Cultus Lake where they established many life-long friends. Cultus Lake was very special to Ruth and John and their children as these new friends (Laker’s) became part of their close knit family.

In the early years, Ruth was a stay at home Mom. Later working at Sears for 15 years making many new friends. Ruth loved to entertain and was at her happiest surrounded by family and friends around the pool deck. Ruth also enjoyed her regular attendance at “Curves” Fitness Centre and with the “Red Hat Society” where she meet many news friends that remained in close contact throughout her illness.

The family would like to thank: Dr. Whetter, Dr. Leyen, Pastor Gary Simpson, Abbotsford Cancer Centre, Chilliwack General Hospital ER staff, Palliative Care Nurses, Susanna and Patricia, BCAS Paramedics and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service members for their assistance and support during Ruth’s illness.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, March 29th, 2010 at 1 pm at Broadway MB Church, 46611 Maple Avenue, Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
