March 12, 1928 - September 27, 2021
With deep sadness and heavy hearts we share that Joyce Mae Riddell (Bullied) passed away peacefully on September 27 at the age of 93 years old.
Joyce is survived by her loving family: Robert, her beloved husband of 66 years, daughter Deborah (Doug), son Ross (Karen), and son Duane (Kimberly), and was known as Nana to seven grandchildren - Nicole, Jacob (Chloe), Cameron, James, Marlena (Dan), Megan (Brian), and Lydia, and two great-grandchildren - Finn and Fiadh.
Joyce was born in Holland, Manitoba, on March 12, 1928 to Sidney and Ethel Bullied. She was second born of four children: Phyllis (Jack), Jack (Gwen), and Raymond (Betty). She was always a very proud prairie farm girl.
Joyce attended the Holland Consolidated School through to grade 12. She also studied at the University of Manitoba, and attended Normal School (Teachers College) in Winnipeg, Manitoba and started her career as a schoolteacher.
Joyce met Robert at MacDonald Military Base (north of Portage La Prairie) where he was an RCAF fighter jet pilot and she was teaching school. They married on the fourth of February 1956. Joyce loved her teaching career, however, it was cut short in order to accompany Robert overseas to Zweibrucken, Germany, their firstposting together.
This began a lifetime of travel, with them living in Cold Lake (Alberta), Fontainebleau (France), Baden-Soellingen(Germany), Ottawa (Ontario), Beausejour (Manitoba), Oberammergau (Germany) - finally, retiring in Abbotsford (BC), and later moving to Chilliwack (BC).
Joyce loved travelling and visited most countries in Europe, and crossed Canada and the US from coast to coast, top to bottom, more than once. In later years, she loved spending the winter months in Mexico and Arizona. A talented writer, painter, ceramicist, and gardener, she was also an avid reader, golfer, bridge player, birdwatcher and hostess.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Chilliwack General Hospital who cared for Joyce this past month, and for the prayers and support of family and friends during this difficult journey.
Joyce will forever be remembered as a thoughtful, loving, kind-hearted person who always remembered and acknowledged everyone's birthdays, milestones, celebrations and special accomplishments.
Joyce's Celebration of Life will be held at Carman United Church (7258 Vedder Road, Chilliwack) on Tuesday, October 12 at 11 am. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carman Memorial and Endowment Fund (CMEF).
