Aug. 24, 1936-Mar. 20, 2010

John Vandervelde passed away suddenly to be with his Lord and Saviour at the age of 73. He was married for 49 years and was a man of quiet faith who lived it out with countless acts of service both in the community and with his family. If anyone ever needed help, John was there.

He was born in Terwispel, Netherlands and he immigrated to Canada in his early twenties. He was a teacher, principal, ambulance driver, store owner, handy man and caretaker. His hobbies were varied including miniature railroading, piano/organ playing, stamp collecting and tending to his park-like backyard.

Papa loved singing to his grandchildren and showing them the excitement of life through his playful spirit. Going under bridges he would often call out “duck” to which everyone laughingly did.

The detail and wonders of nature were exemplified in his backyard - flowers, trees, shrubs, birds, and goldfish encompassed the grandeur of it all!

As a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Freda Vandervelde; their four children, Helen (Dan) Harder, Henry (Paulette) Vandervelde, Grace Graham, and Mary (Brent) Ediger; grandchildren, Danielle, Stephanie, Chris, Victoria, Adrienne, and Jordyn; great-grandchild Grady.

John was predeceased by 1 sister and 1 brother, as well as another sister the following day.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Agassiz Agricultural Hall, 6800 Pioneer Avenue, Agassiz, B.C.

The family wishes to thank the ambulance and hospital staff of Chilliwack for their assistance and care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of John Vandervelde to World Vision if so desired.
