July 16, 1940 - July 4, 2022
It is with great sadness we announce the shocking and untimely passing of our beloved Husband, Father, Uncle and Friend John (Malcolm) Shanks.
Malcolm was born in South Harrow, Middlesex, England to parents Jack (1911-1991), and Dorothy (1915-1987).
In 1948 Malcolm, immigrated to Canada(Victoria),with his parents and brotherMike(1943-2019). Following his time at St Michael's University School and Victoria High School, Malcolm experienced a variety of jobs in accounting, sales and electrical before finding his "lot in life" in municipal administration. This career took him to a variety of locations, over more than 25 years. This included time in Central Saanich, Sechelt, Nakusp, Delta and finally Cultus Lake.
In 1973, he and then wife (Rosemary 1938-2020). welcomed his first born son Philip to the world. 3 Years later in 1976, they welcomed their second son, Stephen.
Malcolm was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing Cricket, Basketball, Badminton, Soccer and Golf. His favourite sport was Cricket, where he was very proud to have captained both Victoria and Vancouver teams (throughout different years).
Malcolm met the love of his life, Susan while on a cricket tour of England and were married in 1983. In 1985, they became the proud parents of son Richard.
Malcolm was not just a great man, but was a great human being. He was a friend to all and was always happy to strike up a conversation with anyone he encountered. He was thankful for the many friends he made through the OAP, the Heritage Singers, his golf group and everyone else who came into his life. He will be greatly missed by many family and friends, including sons Philip (Ines), granddaughter Elena; Stephen (Tara), granddaughters Jill, Kendryk and Anna; Richard (Sarah); niece Dawn (Ari) nephew Kai, Niece Taia and of course his loving and caring wife Susan.
A funeral service will be held at Devlin's Funeral Home in Gibsons, BC. A celebration of life will be held sometime in the future. A date and time will be provided through the Chilliwack Progress at a later date.
