John Hier passed away December 14th 2007 in Chilliwack, BC age 76. He was born in Barrhead Alberta on May 10th 1931.

John was a Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class (Royal Canadian Navy/Canadian Armed Forces), Base General Safety Officer (Civil Servant) from Canadian Forces Base in Chilliwack and a retired Hog Farmer.

As a young man “Jack” was active in all sports, excelling in hockey (goalie) and baseball. When his playing days were done he turned to refereeing, Scout leadership, president of minor lacrosse, minor hockey tournament director and 4H leadership.

He was a 46-year friend of Bill Wilson. In his later years he was an extremely active member in all facets of his church, a carpet bowling tournament organizer, a long-time supporter of the Chilliwack Chiefs and Bruins and he spent many hours tending to his garden and the local birds.

“Jake” is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Eileen Frances Jacob; children: Michael Hier Jacob (Lise), Kenneth Duncan Jacob (Penny), Jacqueline Patricia Jacob, Jean Elizabeth Porter (Mike); 10 grandchildren: Jodie, Christine, Amanda and Sara, Jacob, Jack, Jeff, Joseph, and Jocelyn Porter, and Stephanie and Shawn Ackerman; siblings: Jean Jesperson, Judy Dunbar, Peggy Murphy and numerous nieces.

Predeceased siblings Florence Beeson (Bill) and Duncan McLeod (Maureen).

A viewing was held Wednesday, Dec. 19 from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Henderson’s Funeral Home. A mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary’s R.C. Church on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Father Paul is celebrant.

Final resting place will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family is encouraging donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. We commend the nurses and staff at Chilliwack General Hospital for the outstanding quality of life they gave to Jack during the last two months of his life.
