John Goertzen

April 3, 1928 – July 8, 2021
John passed away peacefully with his wife of 67 years by his side, at the age of 93 on July 8, 2021. He was born April 3, 1928 in Coaldale, Alberta, 5th out of 10 children born to Peter and Sara Goertzen and first born in Canada.
At 16, his family moved to Oliver where he met the love of his life, Louise Thiessen. They married in 1953 and moved to Chilliwack the following year. They were blessed with 3 children, Lionel (Debbie), Debbie (Steve) and Ron (Rosie), 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren Johnny (as he was known by many) was a man of integrity, extremely loyal, and a good provider for his family wearing many hats.
As a teen in Alberta, he had his own trapline, harvested ice for refrigeration, in Oliver, BC he worked picking fruit and pruning in the orchards. In Chilliwack he worked as a logger, janitor at CFB, labourer at the Popkum Lime Plant, delivered furnace oil for Esso & Texaco, operated an ore hauler at Logan Lake and then ended his working career with the job he most enjoyed – driving school bus for 10 years. He loved the kids and they loved him. Johnny was kind, fun-loving and generous – a very loving husband and amazing father.
A favourite Uncle to his many nieces and nephews and a favourite Grandpa and Great-Grandpa with all his teasing, jokes and story-telling.
John always maintained a beautiful home and yard, loved his vegetable gardens and making preserves. He was also a self-taught mechanic tinkering on his vehicles to keep them running.
Mom & Dad enjoyed travelling (by ground preferably) and purchased a camperized van in 1987.
They both loved camping, exploring and discovering the many splendours of BC, Alaska and WA. Together, Mom & Dad also enjoyed recreational bowling and were league bowlers for many years in Chilliwack. People who met Dad were constantly amazed when he told them his actual age as he was always so ‘young at heart’ and had that ‘twinkle’ in his eye.
He will be sorely missed by us all, but forever in our hearts as his memories live on.
John was predeceased by his parents, 5 brothers, 2 sisters, great granddaughter, Paige and eldest son, Lionel.
Special thanks and appreciation to his family doctor, Dr M. Dodds and to the specialists and nurses in ER at Chwk General Hospital.
Immediate family will attend a graveside service July 24, 2021 at 10 am.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date – TBA.
