Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Songwriters: Paul McCartney / John Lennon

1947-2024 ~ John Fletcher Maclachlan, devoted Dad; loving Papa; businessman by profession, but musician at heart; world's best hugger and supportive "counsellor" to anyone in need of a judgment-free ear, died Thursday, May 9, 2024 in Croatia, while traveling in Eastern Europe with his wife (and indisputable soulmate of 45 years) Maureen.

Born in 1947 in Chilliwack B.C., to local radio station owners Murdoch and Ann Maclachlan, John grew up surrounded by music. A self-taught musician, John could play the piano, trumpet, harp, harmonica, and banjo, but what he was most known for was his guitar.

Over the years, John was a member of numerous musical groups, from a high school rock band to the band at Pacific Spirit United Church, and met regularly with friends for lively "jam sessions". In his heart, John was a performer, singing and playing for everyone around him, including his children, Darren and Lindsay, whom he'd sing to sleep as children.

John was loved and cherished by many, far and wide. While music was his passion, he was also a spirited basketball and baseball player as a kid, a keen hockey player in his adult years and an avid golfer till his end. He was sought after by many friends and family for his non-judgmental advice, even temper and expertise in "seeing all sides of a situation".

He was a self-proclaimed "non list-maker", who had endless to-do lists; an "all-around guy", "fix-it man", professional level "Mo's Burnt-Pot-Scourer"; and strong proponent of "it's good enough syndrome" (a term coined long ago by Maureen). Nothing made John happier than knowing the people he loved were happy.

John is survived by his wife, Maureen, for whom he would serenade regularly with love songs, and his children, Darren and Lindsay (Phil). He is survived by his grandsons Joseph (8), Oliver (5) and Gabriel (4) and chosen grandtwins, Parker and Kennedy Lee (15). He is also survived by his older sister, Kim Collett.

We will miss his twinkling blue eyes and his gigantic sneezes; his regular pontificating on all questions, big and small; and his ability to quote a relatable song for every situation we might find ourselves in.

A celebration service in honour of John's rock 'n' roll life will be held at Pacific Spirit United Church (formerly Ryerson United), 2195 W 45th Avenue, Vancouver, on Saturday, July 6 at 1pm.

A live link to the celebration is available at for those who wish to virtually attend.
