Johanna Vermeer

Johanna Vermeer passed away September 14, 2005 peacefully with family at her side at the age of 89.  She was a resident of Eden Intermediate Care Facility for the past four years as an Alzheimer’s patient and survivor of several strokes.

She was born July 4, 1916 to Jan and Marretje denUyl in Oudenrijn, the Netherlands.  She married Gerard Vermeer, March 7, 1947 in Opheusden, the Netherlands.  They immigrated with their children to Canada in 1955 and settled in Chilliwack.

Johanna is survived by her husband of 58 years, Gerard, and by her three daughters:  Marretje (Bernard) Saunders of Cochrane, AB, Sheila (Sim) Koopmans of Red Deer AB, and Jane (Harold) Shannon of Vernon BC, and youngest son:  John (Anita) of Chilliwack, 13 grandchildren (9 married), 18 great grandchildren, one sister, Pietje, the Netherlands, and numerous nephews, nieces and other extended family members.

She was predeceased by her oldest son, Ron, in 1987, and by both of her parents, and twelve of her thirteen siblings.

Mom will fondly be remembered for her zest for life, her quick wit, her exceptional housecleaning skills and making the best pot of soup for Sunday lunch.  Though she never learned to drive a vehicle, she was still riding her bicycle in Chilliwack till her early 80s.

Mom loved people and enjoyed visiting over a good cup of coffee (with a cookie).  Her hobbies included reading, playing board games and singing in the choir at the First Christian Reformed Church. In her recent years of poor health, Dad was usually at the Care Facility visiting or caring for Mom — he was devoted to her.

Memorial Service to be held Monday, September 19th at 2:30 pm. at the First Christian Reformed Church, 9800 McNaught Rd; Rev. Carel Geleynse officiating. Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

The family extends a special thank you to all the staff at the Eden Intermediate Care Facility for their exceptional care of Mom.
