Joan Elsie Weeks (nee Mathew), passed away peacefully on March 22, 2018 in the Bradley Centre, Chilliwack General Hospital.
Joan was born August 17, 1920 in Bush Hill Park, London, England to Arthur and Elizabeth Mathew. She was the youngest of seven children.
Joan will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Andrea and son-in-law Ralph Verhagen; Grandchildren Amy (Chris) Szeman, Ger (Randi) Verhagen; Great grandchildren Summer, Brady Szeman, Brooklyn Verhagen, and many friends and extended family members.
She is predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Albert (Tom) Weeks, her parents Elizabeth and Arthur Mathew, siblings Dorothy Mathew, Victor (Ruby) Verhagen, Marjorie (Lewis) Gyde, Nora (Alan Taylor), Patrick (Muriel) Mathew and Gladys (Sam) Gillette.
Joan excelled in school, spoke and wrote French, German and Latin and received many awards and certificates of Honour.
She worked as a Legal office clerk and went thru the “Blitz” of London until she enlisted in the “Women’s Auxiliary Air Force” (WAAF) in the Royal Air Force from November 1941 – August 1945, attaining the rank of “Leading Aircraft Woman” (LACW).
While stationed in Eshott, Newcastle, Joan met Tom and they were married February 13, 1943 in Weymouth, Dorset. 3 days later Tom was posted to Canada, where he served until 1946.
After the War, Joan and Tom moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1948, where their only daughter, Andrea was born in 1961. In 1965 they moved to Chilliwack, B.C. for Tom’s new job.
Joan’s whole world revolved around Andrea, Tom and perhaps shopping!
Her sense of humour and ability to make people laugh was legendary.
The family would like to thank the Doctors, nurses, care aides, support staff and Hospice of the Bradley Centre for their help, support and excellent care.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mary-Anne Kaiser for her help and support that went above and beyond.
