January 12, 2022
Jake Kasdorf passed away peacefully on January 12, 2022 in his 81st year. He was born on May 4, 1941 to John and Elizabeth Kasdorf in Irma Alberta. He was born mentally challenged but led a mostly full and happy life.
He was the youngest in the family and had four sisters. When Jake was five the family moved briefly to Bradwell, Saskatchewan and then, because of his Father's asthma they moved to
Sardis and then Chilliwack.
His school years were difficult and frustrating as he could not keep up with the rest of the class. There were not any facilities for him in those days, so he was passed from grade to grade until he was of an age to quit school.
He was baptized in his faith as a young adult. He loved wearing large, gaudy rings and at least two wristwatches. His sense of direction was impeccable but a grasp of numbers eluded him. He enjoyed putting picture puzzles together and had a good eye for spotting the correct piece.
After he left school, he had a lot of time on his hands so he did a lot of walking. Most everyone in Chilliwack knew him. He loved dining at the Royal Hotel. He had a healthy appetite and enjoyed his meals and especially liked anything chocolate.
The Long family did the garbage pickups and once a week one of the sons picked Jake up and he rode along for the day. This was truly the highlight of his week.
Jake began attending Chilliwack Opportunity Society, which was the very best thing that could have happened to him. He was with his peers and the manager and staff were so good to him and for him. Here he could do his puzzles, pursue other interests joke around with the staff and enjoy the entertainment and outings with bowling being his favourite.
He especially enjoyed the many fund raisers with Steve Elliott entertaining.
When his Mother moved into a care facility, the Ministry of Children and Families decided he could live on his own so lived alone in an apartment for a few years with help from two caregivers. This move was not sustainable so he moved into the home of his next caregiver, Shirley Sawatsky.
She was great with him, a capable and loving friend. He enjoyed his time with her for twenty years. Eventually, he required more care so briefly lived with another caregiver. For the last ten years he resided at Eden Intermediate Care Home where he received excellent care and was loved by all - a lot of teasing and fun times. Many thanks to the wonderful staff and also Dr. Fitzpatrick.
Jake was predeceased by an infant sister, his Father, John Kasdorf, his Mother Elizabeth Falk, step-father, David Falk, sister Elisabeth Brown (Kitimat), brother-in-laws Clarence Hala and Don Keith, and step-brothers Willy Falk, David and wife Irene Falk, Vic and wife Louise Falk.
Left to mourn his passing are sisters Mary (Carl) Durksen , Hertha Hala and Magda Keith as well as brother-in-law Hans Brown, step-sisters Anita (Ed Thiessen, Marlene (Orlando) Boldt and Frieda (Ike) Toews.
