Hugh Willoughby Shannon

Hugh Willoughby Shannon, late of Chilliwack, passed away September 12, 2007 at Chilliwack General Hospital. He was born March 28, 1912 in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. There he grew up and was educated, and had his first job in the Bank of Montreal.

In 1935 Hugh came to Chilliwack and was employed by Eddie’s Nurseries. In 1940 he joined “D” Company of the Westminister Regiment and was overseas for four years, where he transferred to the 2nd Canadian Divisional Signals. He spent six years in the army and was discharged at the end of the war with the rank of sergeant.

After trying the garage business with his chum, Ken Kiernan, Hugh worked in the office of the Chilliwack Hospital with the manager, Paul Russell. He also was the secretary-treasurer of Branch 4 of the Canadian Legion. in 1955 he became secretary-treasurer for School District 33 and retired from that position after twenty years.

Hugh was predeceased by his brothers Dick and Ed Shannon and grandson Dave Klassen. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of 66 years, daughter, Karen (Wally) Klassen, son Michael, brother, Henry, grandchildren; Eileen (Ed) Menger, Wendy (Gerald) Guliker, Paul (Denise) Klassen, great grandchildren; Jonathon, Nicole, Rebekah and Zachary Menger, Amanda, David, and Aaron Guliker.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 21, 2007 at 2pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, 9350 Mary Street, Chilliwack.
