Helen Hagkull (nee Maki), was born February 3, 1916, in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. She was the fifth of eight children born to Matt and Amanda Maki, who homesteaded in the nearby town of Eckville. She passed away on Monday, May 1, 2006, at the Eden Intermediate Care Home in Chilliwack.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, six brothers and sisters, and in 1990, by her husband, Ted. She is survived by her four sons: Ronald (Kathy) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Bob (Pat) of Chilliwack, Ramon (Bonnie) of Chilliwack, and Roger (Carol) of Hope, BC; one sister, Ily Matthews; and sister-in-law, Jenny Averill, both of Eckville, Alberta.
She was the proud grandmother of Jeff and Craig; Blair, Brad and Korilea; Stacey and Lindsay; Kelly and Michael; and greatest grandmother to Nora, Brady, Sarah, Matthew, Caleb, Benjamin, Kai, Jasmine, Nicola and Rylan.
Mom will be remembered for her love of hockey, history, gardening, and for her apple pies; her willingness to travel, particularly to her Alberta home; her enjoyment of her immediate and extended family.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to Drs. Tam and Flynn, and to the wonderful staff at Eden Care Centre for their kindness and compassionate care of our mother over the past 16 months.
A private family memorial celebration will take place on Monday, May 8, 2006. If friends so desire, a donation in Mom’s name may be made to the Vancouver Children’s Hospital, or to the Alzheimer’s Society.
