Heather Rempel passed away peacefully on February 3, 2008 at age 49 years. Heather is survived by her loving husband Mark; children, Ashley and Jonathan; father, Peter Unger; siblings Charlotte (Ernie) Wiens, Eric (Laura) Unger, Karin (Dennis) Martens, Norman Unger, Tim (Pearl) Unger, Phil Unger and numerous nieces and nephews. Heather will also be missed by her extended family; mother-in-law, Evelyn Rempel, sisters and brothers-in-law, Gwen and John Kleinschroth, Fred and Kerrilynn Rempel, Karen and Shanan Sadler and their children. She was predeceased by her mother Margaret Unger.

Heather was born on October 25, 1958 in Calgary, Alberta. Her family moved to Brandon, Manitoba and then to Elkhart, Indiana before settling in Chilliwack in 1969. Heather attended Strathcona Elementary, Chilliwack Junior Secondary and graduated from Chilliwack Senior Secondary in 1976. Two years of Bible School was followed by Nurses Training at Vancouver General Hospital. Mark and Heather were married on April 3, 1982. Heather worked for a number of years at Chilliwack General Hospital as a Registered Nurse and then spent a number of years as a Home Care Nurse before “retiring” and becoming a “stay at home” mom to Ashley and Jonathan. Heather enjoyed camping, particularly at Waterton National Park and also treasured family time at the cabin in Sunshine Valley. She loved music and had a heart for children’s ministry. A summer highlight was VBS in her back yard. Heather loved her kids and spent many enjoyable hours volunteering at Unsworth Elementary before being diagnosed with a brain tumour in September 2007. She spent two weeks in Royal Columbian Hospital for surgery and made 30 trips to the BC Cancer Clinic in Surrey for radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Heather was very well supported throughout all of this and was thankful for her friends and family who drove her to her treatments. Her family and friends miss her deeply but are relieved that there are “no more headaches”.

Heather left the following note in her Bible: Romans 15:13. May the God of hope fill you (me) with all joy and peace as you (I) trust in him, so that you (I) may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. November 20/07

Heather’s family wish to thank Dr. Paul Basson for his care and support as well as the Emergency Room Doctors and nurses at CGH. Special thanks to Heather’s dear friends at Home Care who helped make it possible for her to stay at home these past few weeks. The family also thanks the Doctors and hospital staff at the BC Cancer Clinic and the Royal Columbian Hospital.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. from Eden Mennonite Church, 46551 Chilliwack Central Rd. Interment in Vedderview Gardens Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Unsworth Elementary PAC Playground Project.
