Charles,Gary

4 May 1951 - 7 June 2013

With hearts broken Patty & Ashley announce that evil cancer kicked Gary's butt and took him too soon as they held him in their loving arms.

Gary was raised to be an excellent son by his parents Bert and Verda Charles (nee Stark) in Chilliwack. He fulfilled his boyhood dream of joining the RCMP to chase bandits among the hills of Saskatchewan and track drug dealers through the rain forests of BC for over 33 years.

He met his bride Patty Mackey in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan and they joyously raised their daughter Ashley during four transfers throughout BC.

Gary was a life-long fan of the Montreal Canadiens and BC Lions. He owned a collection of history books on Canada's two world wars and eagerly awaited his car and watch magazine subscriptions.

Gary will be remembered for perfecting his lawn-care abilities, studying Elder College courses at VIU, washing and waxing his various vehicles and enjoying a beverage while sharing his wicked sense of humour.

He took early retirement to Nanaimo on his "Island in the Pacific" so he and Patty could travel to China, India and Thailand and be closer to their daughter Ashley.

Gary was predeceased by his brother Rob and father Bert and his grandparents Bill and Edith Stark and Jerome and Victorine Charles. Patty & Ashley must learn to live without his tenderness, generosity, laughter and super hugs and he will be sadly missed by his mom Verda Friedel, sister Janice Braun, numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and inlaws.

We wish to extend our gratitude to the NRGH Cancer clinic staff and Gary's Palliative team who cared for him with gentleness and respect.

Gary requested cremation and no funeral service. He wants us all to remember to hug your family members everyday and don't dwell on the negative.
