Gary died peacefully at Chilliwack Hospital on 18 September 2024 with his daughters and sons-in-law by his side. Gary was born 2 February 1940 in Magrath, Alberta to Albert and Elma (Krahn) Gast.
He grew up on a grain farm, but did not want to be a farmer, so he joined the Bank of Montreal. At the bank, he met 2nd Lieutenant army officers who were making more than he was, so he decided he could do that. Military life suited him.
He retired as a Major in Chilliwack, having served in 5 provinces and in Germany over his 32-year career. In his 20's, Gary met Elizabeth "Betty" Froese in Chilliwack while performing in a theatre production with her brother, David. They married in 1964 and shared almost 52 years together before she passed in 2016. He is survived by his two daughters, Karen (Robin) Reger, and Heather (Jeff) Addley, 2 granddaughters Katie and Naomi Addley, his sister Judy (Brian) Barnett, nephews Ryan and Randy and their children.
Gary was an avid and talented musician his whole life. After retirement, he was able to dedicate more time to his music. In 2008, he represented British Columbia in the national "Senior Star" music competition.
He was a dedicated Rotarian and leaves behind many cherished friends there and in his community.
