“Betty”

(nee McNay)

(1931 - 2009)

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden, but peaceful passing of Elizabeth Margaret “Betty” Nichols, on April 2, 2009 at the Chilliwack Hospital.

Betty was born a coal miner’s daughter on October 22, 1931 in Coal Creek, BC. She obtained her teaching degree from the Provincial Normal School, Victoria, BC in 1951 and taught her first year in Michel-Natal and followed with one year in Cranbrook. After the move to Chilliwack, Betty Nichols taught for over 30 years in School District No. 33. She retired in 1988 from the teaching profession she loved so much.

She married Alex “Punk” Nichols also in 1951 and they raised three sons. Betty enjoyed watching all three of her boys play hockey and the family spent many summers camping, fishing and visiting in the Fernie area where Betty grew up.

“Boot Scootin’ Betty” was very involved for several years with the Seniors Line Dancing group. She also loved cooking, gardening and reading a good mystery book.

Betty is survived by her three children: Wayne, Gary and Trish and their son David, and Alan; her sister Georgiana Evans of Delta; her brother Malcolm (Darlene) McNay of Fernie; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Alex in 2004.

A celebration service of Betty’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 in the chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home in Chilliwack with a tea/reception to follow.
