(March 20, 1923 - Oct. 6, 2010)

Elizabeth passed away at the Bradley Extended Care Home on Oct. 6, 2010 at the age of 87. She was born in Altenau, Ukraine.

She came to Canada on June 22, 1948 and worked as a farm labourer in Springsteen Manitoba. In November 1948 she moved to Chilliwack, BC and worked in housekeeping at the Empress Hotel. In 1949 Michael Chayka was able to locate her after meeting her through a fence as she was working as a farm laborer on a Collective Farm and he was in a POW camp in Schnau, Germany. They were married Dec. 30, 1951 and she became a homemaker.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Anne (Rick) Schellenberg; grandsons: Michael (Kim), Tony (Johanne) and Mark (Janis) Schellenberg and four great-grandchildren; Jack Eden, Tye and Liam; her son George Chayka (Velvet Douglas); grandchildren: Nikki, Katie (Dan) and Michael Chayka; her sisters: Annie (Henry) Braun, Tina Lewis; and brothers: George (Elsie) Peters and Pete (Helga) Peters and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Gerhard and Maria Peters; husband, Michael Chayka on July 4, 2004; her sister, Marie Krautter; brothers-in-law: Ullrich Krautter, Leslie Lewis; and nephew Johnny Sheller.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Bradley Centre and the Chilliwack Hospice Society for their kindness and helpfulness during her care and passing.

A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 2:00 at Sardis Community Church, officiated by Pastor Hugo Reimer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chilliwack Hospice Society or to the charity of your choice.
