Doug passed away with his family by his side on Saturday night. He was an amazing husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. He will be deeply missed by his daughters Karin of Salmon Arm and Lori (Rod) of Lethbridge; sons Brian (Michelle) of Kelowna and Gordon of New Westminster; his grandchildren Tristin (Peter), Kaira (Taylor), Josh, Kali, Ben, Adam and Jake. He will also be missed by nieces, nephews and dear friends. Doug was pre-deceased by his wife Shirra, sister Peg and brother Sandy.
Doug grew up in Chilliwack and at Cultus Lake. He was a lifeguard and swam competitively throughout University. In 1960 Doug moved to Prince Rupert for his first teaching job, where he met Shirra. They were married in 1962 and moved to Enderby in 1968. Doug taught for most of his career at A L Fortune Secondary School and then opened the first Storefront School in Enderby where he spent the last four years of his teaching career. He retired in 1995 and spent the next years volunteering in many capacities for his community and traveling to as many places as he could.
Doug's family was his main focus and he made sure that his kids had wonderful experiences throughout their life, he was involved in their activities in any capacity possible. The Main family spent their summers camping and traveling all around Canada to visit famlly and friends. Neighbourhood children were always welcome at Mainstay to play, eat or visit.
After Shirra passed away suddenly in 2010 Doug started to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. He was able to go on 9 trips with them, mostly in Central America. In between his trips he was proud to volunteer at many swim meets throughout Southern B.C., with the Food Bank, his Church, as well as canvassing for various organizations. He was able to be involved in those activities right up until this year.
A service for Doug will be held at St. Andrews United Church in Enderby B.C. on Saturday April 14, 2018 at 2:00 PM. There will be a reception/tea to follow at the Senior's Center.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to St. Andrews United Church or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
