September 20, 1932 - June 23, 2018
Douglas Ramon Gibson, born and raised in Chilliwack, passed away at Chilliwack General Hospital on June 23, 2018 at the age of 85. Doug was born on August 20, 1932 to Victor Gibson and Evelyn (Mossop) Gibson. He spent his career as a much-loved teacher and principal at elementary schools throughout Chilliwack.

He met his future wife Naomi (MacSwan) as fellow teachers, and they married on August 19, 1967. They settled in Ryder Lake and had two children, Matt and Erin. In retirement, he pursued his passion for running, completing over 26 marathons, 18 half marathons and competing in the BC Seniors Games. In recent years running turned to walking and some of his favorite times were spent visiting with friends along the Rotary Trail with his beloved dog Nahanni.

Doug was a local historian who cared deeply for Chilliwack and its past. He loved old maps and photos of Chilliwack, classic movies, CBC radio, and Westerns. He could quote Coleridge poetry from memory, loved a good discussion of world geography, and a game of Connect 4 with his granddaughter. He valued family, good neighbours and good friends, and always enjoyed a hot cup of drive-thru coffee, lemon tarts, and the serenity of his Ryder Lake farm.

Doug is survived by Naomi, his son Matt (Laura), daughter Erin and granddaughter Harper; his brother Jim (Gail) and many nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his parents Victor and Lynn Gibson, his sister Joan Adair and nephew Ted Adair.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 1:30 PM at the St Thomas Anglican Church Hall, 46048 Gore Avenue, Chilliwack. Doug was deeply concerned about homelessness in Chilliwack.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Ruth & Naomi's Mission (604-795-2322) 46130 Margaret Avenue, Chilliwack.
