March 6, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald ("Red") Schmidt. He passed away surrounded by his family on March 6, 2021, after a 2-year battle with gastric cancer.
Donald is greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, Eva, and his daughters Tara (Nico) Geelhoed, and Ingrid. He is survived by his granddaughters Taunya (Jordan) Krieck, Kirsten (Kurt) Pahl, and his great-grandsons Konraad, Kaden and Parker. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers Alvera Young, Ernie (Inge), Art (Anne), Sylvia (Ted) Wedel, and Mary Ann.
Donald was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for 60 years, including Local 258 in Vancouver.
He lived and worked from South America to Alaska, from New York to California.Wherever there needed to be a high voltage power line built and energized, he was part of it. His family finally settled in Abbotsford "on the farm" for 40 years, before moving to Chilliwack.
Due to COVID protocols, a celebration of life will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to B.C. Cancer or a charity that has special meaning to you.
Donald's family would like to thank Fraser Health and the Oncology Dept. at Abbotsford Regional Hospital for their tremendous compassion and support of Donald and his family.
