Our dear mother passed out of this life on Monday, August 15th, 2011, eleven days after her 90th birthday. She was widowed more than 22 year ago when her husband, our father, Jacob Maljaars, passed away.
Mom was born on the island of Walcheren, Zeeland in the Netherlands on August 4th, 1921. On March 1, 1953 she stepped off the boat in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with her husband and four children to make their way to Chilliwack, B.C. by train. She lived in Chilliwack since then and was an industrious mother and home maker. Seven more children were added to the family in the following years. She is survived by all of them; Martin (Lydia); Archie (Joann); Connie Vrieselaar (Cor); Bill (Ada); Jim (Mary); Dave (Janna); Pete (Cheryl); John (Irene); Casey; Wilma; Wilma VanderWaal (Stan); Mary Zwartbol (Martin). She is survived by her 64 grandchildren, 113 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grand daughter. Also surviving her are her sisters Johanna and Jacomina, and brothers Cornelis and Adriaan, all in the Netherlands.
She was predeceased by her husband and her great daughter Laura as well as several brothers and sisters in the Netherlands.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 18th at 1:00 pm in the Bethel Netherlands Reformed Church, 8920 Broadway St. Chilliwack. Rev. Pieter van Ruitenburg officiating. Opportunity for condolences and viewing is planned for Wednesday, August 17th in the fellowship hall of the church from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. Flowers gratefully declined. Gifts in her memory may be made to Bethesda Christian Association.
