February 10, 1942 – April 2, 2020
It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to our mother, granny, aunty and friend.
In the early morning of April 2, 2020 Carroll passed away peacefully in her sleep. She leaves to mourn her sons Grayson and Christopher Lum (Sarah) and granddaughter Mia. She was predeceased by her parents, baby brother Bradley Hall and husband Melvyn Lum.
Carroll was born an educator. She began as a teacher in Ashcroft, but most of her career was with the Chilliwack School District as a Teacher Librarian. Carroll’s real passion was books and helping students develop a love of reading.
Carroll was known for the many ways she participated in and gave back to communities she was a part of. She helped establish the Abbotsford Farm & Country Market and was always involved with it as a member of the board and a volunteer. Carroll served in various executive positions with the Friends of the Abbotsford Libraries since 2007 and was also an executive member of the Abbotsford Optimist Club for many years. Carroll was an incredible organizer who was warm and inviting with everyone, but she never wanted to be in the spotlight.
Carroll had a warm presence and every time you spoke with her, she made you feel truly heard and gave you her complete attention. She leaves a lasting legacy as a genuine and compassionate person, that is felt throughout her large family, as well as with the countless number of students and community members she touched in her work as an educator, volunteer, and human being.
A Celebration of Life will be held online on April 18 at 3 pm PST. We invite you to watch a live stream of the celebration on Facebook by joining the event page “In Memory of Carroll Lum.” The family welcomes you to share stories of love and laughter on the event page. In lieu of flowers we ask that a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation be made in Carroll’s name.
