October 19, 1945 - February 9, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carrie Hinterberger on 9 February 2025. Born in Calgary, Alberta, she was the firstborn of Henry and Gerta Reimer. Growing up on the family farm near Carstairs, Alberta, she developed a strong work ethic, resourcefulness and a deep connection to nature.
She graduated from high school in 1963 and went on to earn a degree in Education from the University of Alberta, majoring in Home Economics and History. After her graduation, she began teaching at various schools, including Olds High School, Christ the King in Whitehorse, and Rosedale Junior Secondary. She was passionate about education, inspiring students and introducing innovative ideas, such as co-ed Home Economics classes and integrating volunteer assistants into classrooms.
In 1968, she moved to Whitehorse, where she met and later married Herb, starting a life full of adventures. Together, they built a home in Chilliwack and raised their two children, Greg and Amy, teaching them the values of love, respect, and curiosity. Summers at the cabin on Harrison Lake and family vacations in Alberta were an integral part of family life, as was her strong connection to the community. Over the years, she worked with the Chilliwack Children's Festival, the Sardis Doorway program for single mothers, and the Ryder Lake Women's Institute.
In the 1990s Carrie received her Diploma in Library Science from UBC and began working as a teacher librarian in the Chilliwack School District. As a teacher-librarian, Carrie strongly believed in the transformative power of books to cultivate empathy and understanding, fostering a lifelong love of learning and personal growth for many of her students. In her later years, she continued to volunteer, sharing her love of books and learning with others through Elder College.
Her passion for her family, teaching, community involvement, and fabulous cooking will be remembered by all who knew her. Carrie leaves behind her beloved husband, Herb, children Greg (Meghan), and Amy (Amrit), grandchildren Elise and Blake as well as a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and students whose lives she touched. Carrie was an avid reader, always seeking to expand her knowledge of the world. She was also deeply committed to justice and equality, tirelessly advocating for those in need. She delighted in her grandchildren, teaching them to decorate cookies and had many adventures with glitter.
In her final years, as she bravely faced ALS, Carrie was deeply grateful for the compassionate care provided by her medical team, particularly Dr. Scott Bakker whose dedication and support brought her comfort and strength throughout her journey.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2pm on April 12th, 2025 at Sardis Community Church. In advance of this, her family would encourage those who knew her to submit their favorite memories and photos of Carrie using this online digital memory book: https://www.newlywords.com/in-memory-of-carrie-hinterberger.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following charities Carrie supported Sardis Doorway for Mothers & Children Society, Mennonite Central Committee, and the Ryder Lake Women's Institute.
