July 7, 1935 - February 11, 2021
Born to Neville and Jessie Dickinson, Brian grew up in Bexleyheath Kent in England. Brian earned a full scholarship to Thames Nautical Training College "HMS Worchester" where he spent two years training in nautical subjects before joining his first ship M.V. "City of Bath". A serious eye injury caused his indenture to be cancelled so he joined the Pursers Department as captain's writer on the "City of Edinburgh".
Brian immigrated to Canada in 1962 and worked for several companies in management positions. In 1970, Brian was offered a position back in England as an instructor at the same college where he had previously trained before going to sea. This prestigious job meant, in Brian's words, "Hours of Playing in Boats."
Brian's future wife Shirley followed him to England where they married, and his family expanded to include 5 stepchildren. After 10 years in England, Brian and Shirley returned to Canada and made their home in Chilliwack. He retired at the age 63, allowing him more time for gardening, touring and his love of cruising.
One of Brian's wishes was to see every country of the world, and with his early career and cruising, this was almost accomplished.
A year after Shirley passed away in 2015, Brian moved into the Lynnwood Retirement Residence. His very social nature thrived in this new community and he was loved by residents and staff alike. Brian and Grace met at Lynnwood and their friendship bloomed into a loving relationship with many common interests especially their love of traveling. In their time together they enjoyed many trips throughout this beautiful country and abroad.
Brian left a detailed memoire, and in Brian's own words, he said "I moved in with Grace to enjoy a lovely lady's company and feeling a happiness I have never known before".
Brian's endearing personality made friends easily and he will be sorely missed by many. You will always be in our hearts Brian.
A memorial is planned for a future date.
