It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Robert John Henry Kern. Bob was born in Kitchener, Ont. to Mildred and Henry Kern, growing up with four sisters, Dianne, Pat, Susan, Dale and one brother, Terry.
At 18, he joined the army, serving in Germany and Canada until he was eventually stationed at Base Chilliwack, where he met his soulmate, best friend and wife of almost 50 years, Marge Nowell. They lived near the base for a few years before starting a family, and to their surprise welcomed twin boys, Justin and Jason.
Bob and Marge purchased property in Columbia Valley and began building their dream home, with the help of Marge's parents. Bob and Marge raised their kids in that house, Bob working as a Maytag repairman, and helping their friends and community. Bob led the Columbia Valley Fire Dept., serving as Chief for 23 years.
Bob eventually became a school bus driver, his warm, caring manner making him a favourite with the kids. As time went on and the boys moved out, Bob and Marge eventually sold the property and moved back to Keith Wilson Rd. to help take care of Marge's aging parents. They built a house on her parents' property and lived there to this day. The family grew, with Jason and wife Heather living on Promontory, Justin and Stephanie in Calgary.
Bob eventually welcomed three grandchildren, Jason's Anna and Josh, and Justin's Mardy. He cared deeply for his family and so loved spending time with his grandkids. Bob always had a smile on his face, and an infectious laugh that brought smiles to everyone. He was amazing to be around and will be greatly missed.
There will be a memorial service limited to family and close friends at Henderson's Funeral Home at 2 pm on Friday, July 10th. This service will be live streamed for others who wish to participate with the family in celebrating Bob's life. Beginning at 4 pm, there will be a socially distanced outdoor gathering at Marge and Bob's home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Society would be appreciated.
