Ells was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Marjory (nee Gatrell).
He is survived by his five children: Blake (Michiyo), Daryl (Dayna), Craig (Joanne), Nadia and Jason (Amy). And by five grandchildren: Clinton, Shea, Dylan, Julia and Owen.
Raised in White Rock he began an accounting career in the 1950s. After moving to Chilliwack from the interior of British Columbia the family joined the local branch of their church where Ells read and sang.
He was also active in the wider community, participating in the Chilliwack branch of the Rotary Club, the local Barbershop singers, City Council and the Parks Board.
He brought up his children to share his love of the outdoors, walking, hiking, skiing, canoeing and motorcycling. He supported them in minor hockey, swimming and music. He taught them many important life lessons with love and principle.
