Barbara Elizabeth Hill

August 31, 2018
Passed away peacefully on August 31st, 2018, at the age of 97.

She was surrounded by her loving family. Barbara is survived by her five children: David (Yvonne), Barbara Jr. (Brian), Ken (Jackie), Pat (Jim), and Don (Arleigh), ten grandchildren: Daniel, Ryan (Angie), Matthew, Andrew, Shanda, Ami (Will), Benjamin (Megan), Jemma (Scott), Kevin, Adrian (Samantha), and seven great-grandchildren: Tyrese, Jesse, Cady, Luke, Hannah, Mason and Bryn.

Barbara was born in 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was a beloved wife, a devoted mother, and a hard working woman who had a wonderful sense of humour. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Masters Degree in Foods and Nutrition and then taught at the University of Michigan for three years, and finally joined the UBC Home Ec Faculty in 1946. Barbara re-met Arthur on the UBC badminton court and thus began their 66 years of adventure.

Mom was a gracious lady who loved getting to know others. She had a wonderful ability to connect with people and was sincerely interested in their stories and lives. She enjoyed travelling with Arthur throughout Europe and many other Central and South American countries both for pleasure and while completing various CESO volunteer projects. Barbara was frugal and practised the three R’s long before reduce, reuse, and recycle became mainstream. Mom also had quite a green thumb and she enjoyed gardening and writing, brewing her own wine, and caring for her Ryder Lake animals.

The family is grateful for the support and loving care given to Barbara, with special thanks to Dr. Basson and the staff of both The Cascade Lodge and The Birchwood.

A Celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at the Carmen United Church in Sardis, on Monday, October 29th at 1:00 pm. If desired, donations to the Carmen United Church, in lieu of flowers, will be gratefully received.
