It is with sadness that the family of Arlene Ruby Alice Mathiesen of Amherst NS, formerly residing in British Columbia in the cities of Richmond, Chilliwack and Surrey BC, announce her passing on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst.
Mom was born on February 16, 1937 in Vancouver BC. She was the daughter of the late Hazel (Butler) Rice. Mom grew up in Vancouver but moved to Richmond and graduated from Richmond High, where she met and later married her husband David Mathiesen.
Mom was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters for over 65 years. Her and Dad were very involved with the fraternal side of the organization and met many lifelong friends.
Later in life, Mom and Dad became members of the Chilliwack Car Club and travelled around BC in their 1952 Hudson and made many friends.
Mom donated many blankets to the maternity ward of Amherst Hospital. She truly enjoyed each Saturday at the Knitting Club which Dr. Helen invited her to join. Mom loved knitting, crocheting and sewing.
Arlene will be dearly missed by her sons Ralph (Christine) and Philip (Catherine); grandchildren Adam, David (Jen), Andrew (Heather), Michelle, Justin, Gracie and Joey; great grandchildren Kaleigh, Jason, Avery and Michael; brother Wilf (Pat); and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Arlene was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, David, son Michael and brother Jim.
Following Arlene's wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service.
Arlene will be laid to rest at the Mathiesen family plot beside her husband at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, BC.
Donations may be made in Arlene's memory to the Cancer Society or to the Cumberland Cancer Assistance Fund.
