November 10, 1939 - April 2, 2025
We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved husband and father Anthony (Tony) Roper. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 2nd 2025, after a two-year struggle with cancer.
Tony was born on November 10th, 1939, in Poole, Dorset, on the south coast of England. After finishing school Tony studied to become a Chartered Accountant and worked in Industry for a few years before the desire to find new opportunities led him to immigrate to Canada. Tony arrived in British Columbia in 1968 and, after a two-week job search, found employment in Chilliwack with the Accounting firm Edmondson Robbins. He became a partner in the firm in 1972, which eventually became known as Edmondson Roper. He stayed with the firm until his retirement in 2002.
In 1969, a year after moving to Canada, his boss's wife introduced him to her cousin, and a year later, Tony married Doreen, his wife of 54 years. Tony is survived by his wife Doreen and their children Jennifer (Tim) Brandsma (Chilliwack) and son Christopher (Janice) Roper (New Delhi, India) and his 5 grandchildren, Cole, Luc, Finn, Catherine, and Grace, as well as his siblings, brother Roland (Pauline) Roper (Langley, BC), Doreen Knight (Poole, UK), and Sue (Bob) Harris (Poole, UK).
Throughout his life Tony was an active community member and volunteer. He was a member of the Chilliwack Kinsman Club from 1969 to 1978; he joined the Chilliwack Rotary Club in 1978 and served as president of the club in 1986. He was a member of the Chilliwack Golf Club from 1970 and in his later years served on the club's board of directors and finance committee. He believed deeply in community service and always looked for ways to give back to Chilliwack, his adopted home. He and Doreen developed lasting friendships through church, golf and with their Bridge Club. Starting in 1975 they met for monthly bridge nights, took vacations together, and became lifelong friends. A weekly highlight for Tony was singing in the choir of Cooke's Presbyterian Church. Having been a member of a boy's choir as a child he was a lifelong music lover, especially of choral music. He found great comfort in his final days listening to choral music from around the world.
Tony loved spending time with his grandkids. He found great joy in his role as Granddad, whether it was taking them golfing, playing Mexican Train at home, going on summer holidays together, or being able to watch them compete in their various sports. He took great pride in their successes and accomplishments.
The family would like to give our heartfelt thank-you to Drs. Bright and Donelly, and to the staff and volunteers of the Cascade Hospice where Tony spent his final week. Their thoughtfulness and professionalism will be remembered by the family as they were able to look after Tony and provide him with the best possible care through his final week.
A Memorial Service will be held on June 7th at 2 pm at Eden Mennonite Church, 46551 Chilliwack Central Road, Chilliwack, BC.
