Altiena Van Der Meulen (nee Arends)

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our much loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother on April 10, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born on December 13, 1942 in Vorwald Germany.

As a young girl she immigrated to Canada with her family and grew up in the Abbotsford area. In 1961 she married Jacob and they dairy farmed in east Chilliwack until his death in 1988. This is where they raised their five children. After moving to town she spent her later years volunteering in the church kitchen, meeting friends for coffee, going on a few trips, and visiting with grandchildren and great grandchildren who were all very dear to her,

Altiena is survived by sons Willie (Michele), Bernie (Yvonne), Charlie (Karen) and daughters Sandy Light and Janet (Henry) Slootweg. 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Siblings Jenny (Art) Arendse, John (Aletta), Henk (Helen), Audrey (Gerry) Gelderman and sister in laws Anita Arends and Dorothy (Gerald) Samplonius. Numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, husband Jacob, brother Ben, and 3 great grandchildren.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the medical staff at Chwk General Hospital for all the care given to her and a special thanks to the Glenwood staff for making her stay there comfortable until she was able to return home. Also to Henderson’s funeral home for all their assistance during this difficult time.

A family graveside service was held on Tuesday April 17th followed by a memorial service at the Salvation Army church.

Should you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army Church are appreciated.
