May 21, 1925 – Mar. 2, 2011

After a rich and fulfilling life, Al passed away peacefully at the age of 85 years at Chilliwack General Hospital.

Al spent many years in White Rock prior to his move to Chilliwack. Al was born in Swan River, Manitoba, and entered the Second World War at the young age of 17. He was very proud to be one of the liberators of Holland where he met and married his first wife, Desiree. They lived in 13 locations in western Canada during their happy 47 years of marriage. Al worked for C.N. Telecommunications his entire career.

After the passing of Desiree in 1993, Al moved to Chilliwack and married Betty Hunt, to whom he was married for 17 years. They spent many fabulous years together, including travels to many places.

He is also survived by his four children from his marriage to Desiree: Myra Merkal (Steve), Sylvia Sax (Bo), Carter ( Fiona) Roger (Kim) as well as grandchildren Evan (Arin), Jarett, Lila, Sarah, Christopher (Tiffany), Desiree & Valerie. Great-grandchildren Sadie, Tatum & Martin.

He is also lovingly remembered by Betty’s family, Allan Hunt (Sonja) who took extremely good care of him in his later years, Norman Hunt (Marilyn), their children Kristen (Chad), Lisa (Matt), Danny, great-grandchild Caetlyn.

In White Rock, Al was very involved in community service. One of Al’s biggest accomplishments was writing the story of his life “Rich Like Me”. Al had an undying sense of humour and always saw the bright side of each day.

A service will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 10:30 a.m. at Cooke’s Presbyterian Church, 45825 Wellington Avenue, Chilliwack, BC V2P 2E1. Tea will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to a charity of your choice.

Weep not – Al has merely found another place to shine.
