BC Hydro crews are currently working to restore power to about 300 Chilliwack residents at locations scattered across the region.

The largest outage is in west Chilliwack near Old Orchard Road, where more than 200 customers are without power.

They’re part of nearly 7,000 customers in the Lower Mainland who have lost power due to Sunday’s snowfall and freezing rain.

North of the Fraser was hit hardest. At one time there were about 3,000 costumers without power – including people in Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs. Power in much of the area has since been restored.

Roadways, too, have been affected. Highway 1 near Peters Road was closed briefly Monday morning as crews worked to removed tree branches that were downed by ice.

And while those trees have now been cleared, a rockslide has closed the highway to eastbound traffic. Vehicles are being diverted at Highway 9 and rerouted to Highway 7.

The road is not expected to reopen until at least Tuesday morning.
