UPDATE: Forensics unit on the scene after car fire downtown Chilliwack

Friday morning blaze destroys vehicle as police investigate the scene

The RCMP’s forensic identification unit was still on the scene at noon Friday after an early morning car fire in the downtown Safeway parking lot.

Mounties are saying little about the investigation other than it is an “unfolding police incident” and it is in the “examination phase of their investigation.”

Chilliwack firefighters responded to the car fire just after 7 a.m. in the plaza’s parking lot at First Avenue and Cheam Avenue.

Early reports were that the vehicle appeared to be abandoned, and there is no word on if anyone was inside but by 8:30 a.m. there was a blue tarp over the vehicle, a tent over that, and both police and fire investigators on the scene.

Firefighters quickly doused the blaze, but not before the vehicle was completely gutted.

A number of people on social media claim to have seen a body in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, but police have said nothing about anyone in the car nor has the Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit arrived on the scene.

Chilliwack RCMP have yet to say if the vehicle had been stolen, but the area was quickly put behind police tape and will remain behind tape “for a short period of time,” according to a police press release.

Mounties are asking anyone with information to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or, to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
