Volunteers gathered twice last week to help shuck corn for a good cause.

About 17 people on Tuesday and nine on Thursday gathered to shuck and cut some of the 115 dozen cobs of corn at Local Harvest Market for the Chilliwack Bowls of Hope Society.

A total of 23 bags of corn, each containing five dozen cobs, were donated by Sparkes Corn. The cobs were shucked, cut, then frozen and will be used to feed 650 kids at 18 schools throughout the school year.

Bowls of Hope provides daily hot lunches to children in need in Chilliwack.

Grants from Chilliwack Foundation paid for two walk-in freezers for the society, and Local Harvest provided the space to store the freezers.

The society is looking for a donation of 200 lbs of fresh or frozen fruit, such as peaches, plums or berries, to be used in a fruit medley. Those interested in helping with this donation can email Natalie Pierson at coordinator@chilliwackbowlsofhope.com.
